Reid Ewing, PhD
Urban Analyst

Dr. Ewing is one of America’s most cited transportation scholars and the 6th most published urban analyst globally. As head of the Metropolitan Research Center at the University of Utah, he created the “7-D” variables—a widely used framework for measuring how density, design, and accessibility influence travel behavior. He also developed the nation’s only meta-analysis database on transportation performance and the built environment, as well as the renowned Ewing-Hamidi sprawl index.

An industry leader with decades of consulting experience, Dr. Ewing has authored eight books, including the APA “essential” text Best Development Practices. His research on MPOs and land-use planning is a benchmark for practitioners, focusing on how metropolitan characteristics affect vehicle miles traveled, mode share, and public health. He currently serves as associate editor of the journal Cities, bridging the gap between academic theory and applied planning solutions.
